E-COMMERCE SEO

After iOS14 broke your paid attribution, organic search is the channel where every conversion is tracked — here is how to build it

We build the product and collection page SEO that US e-commerce brands use to reduce dependence on Meta and Google paid channels, targeting the long-tail and comparison queries that Amazon does not serve.

US e-commerce stores ranking for long-tail and comparison queries outside Amazon's stronghold · GA4 e-commerce attribution setup for organic search tracking · Google Merchant Centre free product listing integration · Shopify faceted navigation resolved for clean crawl and indexation
This is for you if

Who This Is For

You built your brand on Facebook and Instagram ads. Before iOS14, your attribution was clear, your ROAS was predictable, and you scaled. Since 2021, your reported ROAS has dropped, your CAC has risen, and you are not sure how much of your paid spend is working. You have a Shopify store with decent traffic from paid but almost nothing from organic search. You want a channel that is not affected by Meta's attribution problems.

You sell in a category where your product is measurably better than what Amazon carries: specialty food, craft goods, technical outdoor gear, premium pet supplies, or health products backed by real formulation work. Amazon dominates your broad category keywords. But buyers who want what you specifically offer — and there are enough of them — search with more specific queries. You are not appearing for those queries because your SEO has not been built for them.

You ran Universal Analytics for years and had a reasonable picture of organic search contribution. After the GA4 migration, your attribution reports look different and you are not sure what your organic search performance actually is anymore. You need both the SEO work and the GA4 setup to correctly track what it produces.

What's broken

What's Broken

Product SEO strategy written before iOS14 — still optimising for broad keywords that Amazon dominates instead of long-tail queries with buying intent

The keyword targets in your current SEO setup were probably chosen in 2019 or 2020. Broad category keywords like "running shoes" or "coffee maker" are dominated by Amazon in Google results — Amazon appears in the top three for most of these. The effective strategy for US DTC brands in 2024 is long-tail and comparison intent: "trail running shoes for wide feet men," "pour-over coffee maker under $150," "best espresso machine for beginners reviews." Your current SEO is pointed at the wrong targets.

No Google Merchant Centre integration for free product listings — unpaid Shopping impressions left on the table

Google launched free product listings in 2020, making Shopping tab placements available to any Merchant Centre approved store at no cost. Many US Shopify stores have a paid Google Shopping campaign but have not configured free listings, or their Merchant Centre feed has approval errors that suppress free listing eligibility. These are organic Shopping impressions that require no bid — they are being missed.

Collection pages built as filters on a single URL — Shopify's default faceted navigation creates index bloat instead of rankable category pages

Shopify's default filter system adds URL parameters for every filter combination a user applies. A collection page for "women's jackets" filtered by size, colour, and material generates hundreds of URL variants, all of which Googlebot may attempt to crawl. This splits crawl budget and dilutes ranking signals. The alternative — carefully structured collection pages with original content, targeting specific query clusters — turns collection architecture into a source of organic traffic rather than a source of crawl waste.

No structured review aggregation — US buyers check Google star ratings before clicking; stores without them lose CTR to competitors

US shoppers rely heavily on star ratings displayed in Google search results when choosing between products. Stores with AggregateRating schema in their Product markup get star ratings in their organic listings. Stores without it show as a plain text link. At the same rank position, the starred listing gets meaningfully more clicks. If your Shopify store has reviews (Okendo, Yotpo, Judge.me, or Shopify's native reviews) but no schema implementation, your review data is invisible to Google.

What we engineer

What We Do

Long-Tail Keyword Research and Gap Analysis vs. Amazon

We research the specific long-tail, comparison, and specification-based queries in your product category where Amazon does not rank on page one of Google. We build a keyword map distinguishing: queries Amazon dominates (deprioritise for organic), queries where your domain can compete (primary targets), and informational queries that support product pages (content strategy). This becomes the foundation for all product and collection page work.

Product Page Optimisation for Long-Tail Intent

We rewrite product titles, meta titles, meta descriptions, and on-page copy to align with long-tail buyer queries. Each product page is mapped to a specific query cluster — not to a single keyword — so that the page is relevant to how different buyers phrase the same underlying search.

Collection Page Content Build

We write structured content for your highest-value collection pages: buying guide introductions, comparison tables where relevant, FAQ sections targeting question-based searches, and internal links to related pages. This content is written for Google first, then refined for buyer clarity.

Shopify Faceted Navigation Resolution

We audit your filter setup, identify URL patterns being generated by Shopify's collection filters, and implement canonical tags or crawl directives to prevent index bloat. Where specific filter combinations represent high-value, distinct query clusters, we evaluate whether standalone optimised pages are worth building.

Product Schema and AggregateRating Implementation

We implement Product schema with correct US pricing (USD), availability, brand, and condition attributes. For stores using Okendo, Yotpo, Judge.me, or Shopify reviews, we implement AggregateRating schema so your review data appears as star ratings in Google search results. We test all markup in Google's Rich Results Test before deployment.

Google Merchant Centre Free Listings Audit

We audit your Merchant Centre account or set it up if not yet connected. We resolve feed errors suppressing free product listing eligibility, ensure your product data feed meets Google's current requirements, and verify that free listings are appearing in the Shopping tab for your key product queries.

GA4 Organic Search Attribution Setup

We audit your GA4 property for e-commerce tracking accuracy, ensure organic search is correctly attributed as a channel, set up key events for purchase and add-to-cart, and configure a basic reporting view that isolates organic search contribution to revenue. This gives you the attribution baseline to measure SEO ROI going forward.

Monthly Reporting and Iteration

Monthly reports cover keyword rank movements on google.com, organic traffic and revenue by collection and product page, free listing impressions and clicks from Merchant Centre, GA4 organic attribution, and technical health. Each report includes a 30-day priority list.

After With GA4 e-commerce tracking correctly configured for organic search, you see exactly which product and collection pages are driving organic sessions, add-to-cart events, and purchases. Organic search stops being a black box and becomes a line item in your channel performance review, comparable to paid channels with clear ROI.

After Amazon's dominance on broad category terms is real, but its pages are thin on specific specifications, comparisons, and niche buyer intent. A product page optimised for "single-origin Ethiopian coffee whole bean subscription" or "kids rain jacket waterproof 7-year-old" outranks Amazon on those specific queries because Amazon's generic category pages do not match the intent. These long-tail rankings individually have lower search volume, but collectively they add up to significant organic traffic at a higher conversion rate than broad terms.

After Once your Merchant Centre feed is clean and free listings are active, your products appear in the Shopping tab for relevant searches at no cost per click. For US e-commerce brands, Shopping tab visibility is a meaningful top-of-funnel channel, particularly for branded and specific product queries. These impressions are independent of your paid Google Shopping campaigns.

After Once AggregateRating schema is correctly implemented and your review platform is connected, Google displays your product star ratings in organic search results. US buyers who see a 4.7-star rating on a product listing click it at a higher rate than an equivalent unstarred result at the same position. This CTR improvement contributes a positive signal back to Google's ranking algorithm over time.
How it works

Process

  1. 01

Site Audit and Amazon Gap Analysis

    Week 1-2

We audit your Shopify or WooCommerce store against google.com performance data, map your current rankings versus Amazon's for your key product queries, identify faceted navigation issues, and check GA4 e-commerce tracking accuracy. You receive a written audit report before any work begins.

  2. 02

    Keyword Map and Priority Plan

    Week 2-3

We deliver a long-tail keyword map sorted by opportunity (search volume, Amazon presence, your current ranking), a collection page content priority list, a product page rewrite queue, and a Merchant Centre status assessment. You approve this plan before execution starts.

  3. 03

    Implementation in Order

    Month 1-3

We implement in priority order: GA4 tracking verification first (so all subsequent work is measurable), then Merchant Centre free listing setup, then product schema and AggregateRating, then product page copy rewrites, then collection page content. Technical crawl fixes run in parallel.

  4. 04

    Monthly Reporting and Iteration

    Month 3 onward

Monthly reports cover google.com rank movements, GA4 organic revenue attribution, Merchant Centre free listing impressions, CTR changes in Search Console, and technical health. We adjust the keyword and content strategy based on what ranking data shows is gaining traction.

Common questions

FAQ

Should I fight for keywords where Amazon ranks first or focus on different queries?

You should focus on different queries. Amazon holds the top three positions for most broad product category keywords on Google — investing heavily in ranking above Amazon for "coffee maker" or "yoga mat" is a poor use of SEO budget for most DTC brands. The more productive strategy is to find the long-tail, comparison, and specification queries where Amazon's generic category pages do not match buyer intent, and to build product and collection pages that do. These queries have lower competition, higher conversion rates, and are where your product specificity is an advantage rather than a disadvantage.

How do I set up free product listings in Google Merchant Centre for organic Shopping?

Free product listings require a Google Merchant Centre account connected to your store, a product data feed that meets Google's current requirements (title, description, price, availability, GTIN or brand-MPN), and feed approval without active policy violations or data quality errors. For Shopify stores, the Google channel app creates a feed automatically, but feed errors are common and often go unresolved. For WooCommerce, a feed plugin (WooFeed, DataFeedWatch, or similar) is typically needed. Once approved, free listings appear in the Shopping tab when your product matches a relevant search — there is no bid required, only an approved, error-free feed.

Does Shopify's default URL structure hurt SEO compared to a custom setup?

Shopify's default URL structure (yourstore.com/products/product-name and yourstore.com/collections/collection-name) is clean and adequate for SEO. The URL structure itself is not a significant ranking factor. The more important issues in Shopify SEO are: faceted navigation URL bloat from collection filters, duplicate product URLs created when products appear in multiple collections (Shopify generates a /collections/collection-name/products/product-name URL in addition to the canonical /products/product-name URL), and missing canonical tags. These are all addressable within Shopify's standard setup without requiring a custom URL structure.

How do I track e-commerce SEO ROI when GA4 attribution is different from Universal Analytics?

GA4 uses a data-driven attribution model by default, which distributes credit across multiple touchpoints rather than assigning full credit to the last click. This means organic search may receive fractional credit for conversions where a paid ad also appeared in the path. To track organic search ROI in GA4, use the Traffic Acquisition report filtered to Organic Search as the session source to see sessions, purchases, and revenue attributed to organic in the session-level model. Cross-channel comparison requires the Advertising snapshot or custom explorations. We configure your GA4 property with the correct e-commerce events and a reporting structure that isolates organic search contribution clearly.

What is the difference between optimising a collection page and a product page?

Collection pages and product pages compete for different queries and require different optimization approaches. Collection pages target broader category intent: "hiking boots for women," "organic baby clothing," "home office desks." They need original content — a buying guide introduction, category-specific FAQ, and internal links — that gives Google enough signal to rank them for category searches. Product pages target specific product intent: a model name, a specification combination, or a long-tail descriptor. They need optimised product titles, detailed copy covering the specific use case, and structured data markup including price, availability, and reviews. Both types need SEO work, but collection pages typically unlock more traffic because they match higher-volume, category-level queries that product pages cannot serve.
