What's broken

Your Shopify store has SEO problems baked in. Most agencies never find them.

Duplicate URLs

Shopify creates two valid URLs for every product: /collections/[name]/products/[handle] and /products/[handle]. Both get indexed. Google sees duplicate content, splits ranking signals, and often picks the wrong one to rank. International buyers searching for "handmade Nepali pashmina" may land on an unoptimised URL variant — or not rank at all because link equity is divided.

Canonical tag errors

Shopify auto-generates canonical tags, but they don't always point where you expect. Collection-context product URLs sometimes self-canonicalise rather than pointing to the canonical /products/ URL. Misplaced canonicals tell Google to ignore pages you want ranked. Your best product pages may be silently suppressed.

Thin collection pages

Shopify collection pages default to a product grid with no descriptive content. Google treats near-identical collection pages as low-quality, especially when you have dozens of collections for different product categories. "Nepali handicrafts online", "buy Himalayan tea UK" — these commercial keywords need collection pages with real content to rank. A grid of products alone won't cut it.

App bloat damaging Core Web Vitals

Every Shopify app you install injects JavaScript and CSS into your storefront. Review apps, loyalty programs, upsell widgets, currency converters — each adds load weight. Most Shopify stores have 10–20 apps running on every page load. Google uses Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) as a ranking factor. A store loading 800kb of app JS before the first product image hurts rankings and conversion.

Faceted navigation creating crawl waste

Shopify's filter and sort URLs (e.g. ?sort_by=price-ascending&filter.p.tag=organic) create thousands of low-value, crawlable URL variants. Google wastes crawl budget on pages with no ranking value. For Nepali export stores with large catalogues, crawl budget matters. Google should be spending it on your best product and collection pages, not filter permutations.

Missing product schema

Most Shopify themes include minimal or no structured data for products. Without proper Product schema (price, availability, reviews, currency), your products don't qualify for rich results in Google Search or Google Shopping. Rich results — star ratings, price chips, availability badges — increase click-through rates significantly. For stores selling internationally, this is visible conversion impact.

What we engineer

What's included in our Shopify SEO service

Shopify technical audit

A full crawl of your Shopify store mapping duplicate URLs, canonical errors, crawl waste, and Core Web Vitals scores across key page types. You can't fix what you haven't measured. The technical audit creates the prioritised fix list — ordered by ranking impact, not effort. You get: Duplicate URL report, canonical map, CWV baseline by page type, crawl budget waste estimate, prioritised issue list.

Collection page strategy

Commercial keyword research for your product categories, content briefs for each collection page, and an internal linking plan connecting collections to products. Collection pages are your highest-value organic landing pages. For Nepali export stores, ranking "buy Himalayan tea" or "handmade pashmina UK" starts here. You get: Keyword map per collection, content written or briefed, internal link structure, page-level optimisation.

Product page optimisation

Title tag and meta description rewrites, product description improvements, and full Product schema implementation for rich results. Product pages carry the most commercial intent. Weak titles, missing schema, and generic descriptions are leaving organic clicks on the table. You get: Optimised titles and metas, schema markup, description framework, rich result eligibility check.

App performance audit

Every installed Shopify app is tested for its JS/CSS payload, render-blocking impact, and contribution to Core Web Vitals degradation. App bloat is the most common reason Shopify stores fail Core Web Vitals. The fix requires knowing exactly which apps are causing harm and what to do about each. You get: App-by-app performance impact report, removal or deferral recommendations, CWV improvement roadmap.

Shopify theme SEO review

Your theme's heading structure, image alt text, structured data hooks, and schema output are reviewed against SEO requirements. Many popular Shopify themes have heading hierarchy issues (multiple H1s, skipped H2s), missing breadcrumb schema, and no Organisation markup. Theme-level problems affect every page. You get: Heading audit, alt text gap report, schema hook identification, theme developer recommendations.

Organic revenue tracking

GA4 ecommerce tracking verified and connected to Google Search Console. Organic channel performance separated from paid and direct. Without correct attribution, you can't tell if Shopify SEO is working. Revenue from organic search should be visible, session-level, and tied to specific pages. You get: GA4 ecommerce audit, GSC integration, organic revenue dashboard, monthly reporting baseline.

Common questions

Questions about Shopify SEO in Nepal

Does Shopify have built-in SEO?

Shopify includes basic SEO features — editable title tags, meta descriptions, and auto-generated sitemaps — but these are a starting point, not a complete SEO setup. The platform's default architecture creates duplicate URLs, generates canonical tags that aren't always correct, and produces collection pages with no content. Built-in features handle the surface layer; the deeper technical issues require platform-specific work.

Why does Shopify create duplicate URLs?

Shopify's URL structure allows every product to be accessed via two paths: /products/[handle] (the canonical product URL) and /collections/[collection-name]/products/[handle] (the collection-context URL). Both are technically valid and both can be indexed by Google. Shopify adds a canonical tag to address this, but the tag isn't always implemented correctly across all themes, meaning both versions can end up indexed and competing against each other.

How does Shopify affect Core Web Vitals?

Shopify stores frequently fail Core Web Vitals because the platform's app ecosystem encourages installing multiple third-party apps, each of which injects JavaScript and CSS on every page load. Review apps, loyalty widgets, currency switchers, upsell tools — these accumulate. A store with 15 apps commonly has 500kb–1.2mb of app-related JS loading before the main content renders, directly hurting LCP and INP scores.

Can you fix Shopify's canonical issues?

Yes. Canonical issues on Shopify fall into two categories: theme-level canonicals that need to be corrected in the Liquid template, and app-generated pages that create additional canonical conflicts. We audit both, implement the correct canonical strategy, and verify resolution in Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool.

Do you work with all Shopify themes?

We work with all major Shopify themes — Dawn, Debut, Impulse, Turbo, Prestige, Warehouse, and custom themes — as well as headless Shopify setups. The SEO issues vary by theme (Dawn has better structured data hooks than older themes; some premium themes introduce heading hierarchy problems), so the audit is theme-specific.

Is Shopify SEO useful for Nepali stores selling internationally?

It is the primary lever. Nepali stores selling handicrafts, teas, or textiles to UK, US, or Australian buyers need their collection and product pages to rank in those markets. That means geo-targeted keyword research for each market, hreflang for currency/language variants if using Shopify Markets, and technical fixes ensuring the correct URL variant ranks in the correct country.

How long does Shopify SEO take to show results?

Technical fixes (duplicate URLs, canonicals, Core Web Vitals) show impact in Google Search Console within 4–8 weeks of implementation — crawl frequency and index refresh determine the timeline. Collection page content and keyword ranking improvements typically build over 3–6 months. Revenue attribution depends on the starting baseline, but most stores see measurable organic revenue movement within 6 months.

How much does Shopify SEO cost in Nepal?

Shopify SEO engagements for Nepal-based stores typically start from NPR 80,000–120,000 per month for ongoing work, or NPR 150,000–250,000 for a one-time technical audit and fix project. International export stores with larger catalogues or multi-market targets are scoped individually. We provide a clear scope and fixed price after the initial diagnostic — no open-ended retainers without defined deliverables.
