CONVERSION TRACKING QA

Your Conversion Data Might Be Lying — Most Accounts Have Errors You Haven't Found

The majority of paid ad accounts running in Nepal have at least one tracking error that distorts reported performance. Many have several. The most common: a page view counted as a conversion, the same event firing twice, or purchase revenue not passing at all. This QA audit finds every error in your current setup — across Google Ads, Meta Ads, GA4, and GTM — and tells you exactly how to fix each one.

This is for you if

This QA is for businesses that have tracking in place but aren't confident it's working correctly

The business owner whose ads show strong conversions but revenue hasn't moved

The marketing manager who set up tracking months ago and hasn't checked it since

The founder preparing to scale ad spend and wanting clean data before doing so

What's broken

The four most common tracking errors we find

No conversion tracking, or a page view counted as a conversion

This is the most common tracking state we encounter in Nepal accounts. Either there is no conversion tracking configured at all — the ad platform is running on clicks and impressions alone — or a page view event has been tagged as a conversion, meaning every visitor who lands on a page is counted as a converted customer. Smart Bidding fed this signal optimises for traffic, not outcomes.

Duplicate conversion events inflating counts by 2–3x

When both the Google Ads native tag and a GA4-imported conversion are active for the same event, the platform counts the conversion twice. In accounts where GTM also has its own conversion tag alongside these, triple-counting is possible. The reported conversion volume can be two to three times the real figure, and the ROAS number the platform shows has no connection to actual revenue.

Purchase events firing without revenue values

A purchase event that fires without passing a transaction value tells Smart Bidding that a sale occurred but not what it was worth. Every sale looks identical to the algorithm — a Rs 500 transaction and a Rs 50,000 transaction are treated as equivalent conversion signals. Value-based bidding cannot function, and budget allocation across campaigns reflects purchase volume rather than purchase value.

Form events firing on page load instead of form submit

When a form confirmation tag is triggered by the page loading rather than by a successful form submission, every visitor who reaches the page is recorded as a conversion — including people who loaded the page and left without submitting anything. This error inflates lead conversion numbers dramatically and is one of the hardest to detect without systematically testing each trigger.

What we engineer

What the QA covers

Google Ads conversion actions

We audit every active conversion action in your Google Ads account: status, category, counting method, attribution window, and whether imported conversions from GA4 are duplicating natively tagged events. We identify which conversion actions are feeding Smart Bidding and confirm whether those signals are accurate.

Meta Pixel events

We verify that the Meta Pixel is firing the correct standard events on the correct pages, that purchase events are passing the correct value and currency parameters, and that event deduplication is configured if both the Pixel and the Conversions API are in use. We check for common Pixel implementation errors including events firing multiple times per page load.

GA4 key events

We review your GA4 key event configuration — which events are marked as key events, whether the trigger logic is correct, whether parameters such as value, currency, and transaction ID are passing accurately, and whether GA4 is generating additional conversion signals being imported into Google Ads that duplicate existing tags.

GTM tags and triggers

We conduct a full GTM container audit: active tags, paused tags, firing triggers, and any zombie tags that are no longer needed but remain in the container. We test each conversion tag in preview mode to confirm it fires on the correct action — submit, click, purchase — and not on page load or other unintended triggers.

Cross-domain tracking

We check whether your GA4 and Google Ads tracking correctly handles sessions that move across subdomains or third-party domains — including payment gateways, booking systems, and form platforms that sit on a different domain from your main site. Cross-domain attribution breaks are one of the most common causes of lost conversion data.

Attribution model configuration

We review the attribution model in use across Google Ads and GA4 — last click, data-driven, or linear — and assess whether the model reflects how customers actually reach conversion on your site. For accounts where the customer journey involves multiple touchpoints before a decision, last-click attribution systematically undervalues upper-funnel channels.

Conversion window settings

We verify that conversion window settings in Google Ads are appropriate for your sales cycle. Accounts with short conversion windows miss late-converting clicks; accounts with windows that are too long inflate numbers with conversions that have no connection to the ad that triggered them. Both are common and both distort bidding.

What changes

What you receive

Before
After
Before Complete QA report with every issue found
After You receive a written report listing every tracking error found across all checked systems — Google Ads, Meta Pixel, GA4, and GTM. Each issue is described precisely: what is wrong, where it is, and why it matters. Issues are rated by severity: critical (actively distorting bidding decisions), significant (causing data loss or inflation), and advisory (configuration could be improved).
Before Exact fix instructions for each issue
After The report does not just identify problems — it includes step-by-step instructions for fixing each one. Where the fix requires a GTM change, the tag configuration is specified. Where it requires a Google Ads setting change, the exact field and value are stated. A developer or a marketing operations team member can take the report and implement fixes without needing additional context.
Before Clean conversion data as a foundation for bidding
After Once the errors identified in the QA are fixed, Smart Bidding and Meta's advantage algorithms work from accurate signals. Duplicate counts are removed, missing values are restored, and triggers fire when they are supposed to. The algorithms can then optimise toward actual business outcomes rather than phantom events.
Before A tracking baseline you can verify going forward
After The QA establishes a documented record of what your tracking setup should look like when it is working correctly. Future tracking regressions — caused by site updates, new campaigns, or GTM changes — can be caught by checking against this baseline rather than discovering errors months later when reported performance stops making sense.
Common questions

FAQ

Do you need write access to our Google Ads or GTM accounts?

Read-level access is sufficient for the QA audit — we do not make changes to any account during the QA phase. For Google Ads, we need viewer access. For GTM, we need read access to the container. For GA4, we need viewer access to the property. For Meta, a read-only Business Manager role and access to Events Manager.

Our tracking was set up by our previous agency — will you be able to understand it?

Yes. We assess every GTM container and Google Ads account from scratch, regardless of who built it or when. Containers built by different providers often have inconsistent naming conventions, overlapping tags, and undocumented custom variables. The QA process is designed specifically for setups that have accumulated changes over time without systematic review.

We only run Google Ads — do you still audit Meta Pixel and GA4?

The QA covers the channels you are actively using. If you are not running Meta Ads, the Meta Pixel check is not included in scope. However, GA4 is always reviewed because GA4 key events frequently generate conversion signals that are imported into Google Ads alongside natively configured conversion tags — which is one of the most common sources of duplicate counting.

How do we know the tracking issues you find are actually affecting our bidding?

The QA report identifies each issue and explains the specific mechanism by which it affects bidding or reporting. For duplicate conversion actions, we show the two active actions and explain that Smart Bidding counts both. For page-load triggers, we show the trigger configuration and the event log confirming it fires on load rather than submit. Every finding is documented with evidence, not assertion.

What is the difference between a Conversion Tracking QA and a full Paid Ads Audit?

A Conversion Tracking QA is a focused, technical check of whether your existing tracking setup is recording the right events, in the right way, with the right data attached. A Paid Ads Audit covers campaign structure, keyword strategy, bidding, creative, and landing pages in addition to tracking. If your concern is specifically that your conversion data might be wrong, the QA is the right starting point.
