Your Japan Conversion Tracking Is Counting the Same Events Multiple Times

In Japan's dual paid search market, running both Google Ads and Yahoo Japan Ads creates a specific tracking problem: duplicate conversion events firing across both platforms on the same user action. Add untracked phone call conversions and the data feeding your bidding algorithms reflects a picture of performance that does not correspond to what is actually happening.

Who This Is For

Profile 1 — International brands with paid search campaigns in Japan: Your Japan accounts were set up by a local agency or a regional team, and the conversion data coming out of Japan has never been independently verified. You are not certain whether Google Ads and Yahoo Japan Ads are firing separate, deduplicated conversion events or whether the same purchase or lead is being counted on both platforms. You need a systematic check before you can trust the Japan market performance figures you are reporting internally.

Profile 2 — Japan-based businesses running Google Ads and Yahoo Japan Ads together: You are spending on both paid search platforms and your conversion data appears healthy — but cost per acquisition has been drifting upward without explanation. Duplicate YST and Google Ads conversion events are a common cause: Smart Bidding and Yahoo Japan's automated bidding are both training against inflated data and making progressively worse allocation decisions as a result.

Profile 3 — Businesses relying on phone call enquiries in the Japan market: A significant proportion of genuine business enquiries in Japan arrive by phone rather than through web forms. If call conversion tracking is not in place — either through Google Ads forwarding numbers or a third-party call tracking integration — your bidding algorithms have no visibility of those conversions. The QA identifies exactly which conversion types are tracked and which are absent.

Profile 4 — Growth teams preparing to increase paid budgets in Japan: You have been running paid campaigns in Japan at a test budget level and are planning to scale spend meaningfully. Before doing so, you need confidence that the conversion data foundation is reliable. Scaling with duplicate conversion events or missing call tracking does not improve performance — it amplifies the distortion already in the data.

What's broken

What we find in the majority of Japan accounts

Problem 1 — Yahoo YST and Google Ads conversion tags firing duplicate events

This is the most common Japan-specific tracking error. When both Google Ads and Yahoo Japan Ads conversion tags are implemented on the same confirmation or thank-you page — as is standard practice for tracking purchases or form submissions — the same user action is counted as a conversion by both platforms. Neither platform applies cross-platform deduplication. Smart Bidding and Yahoo Japan's bidding algorithms each train against the full, unfiltered figure, producing inflated conversion volumes that make both platforms appear more efficient than they are.

Problem 2 — Phone call conversions absent from all platforms

Japan has a higher rate of phone call enquiries relative to web form submissions than most other markets. In the majority of Japan accounts we audit, phone call conversions are not tracked at all — not through Google Ads call extension forwarding numbers, not through Yahoo Japan's call tracking, and not through any third-party call tracking tool. Bidding algorithms are optimising against web conversions only, which means campaigns driving phone enquiries are systematically undervalued and under-budgeted.

Problem 3 — GA4 and Google Ads conversion data irreconcilable after migration

GA4 migrations that introduced new event names without removing the previous conversion tags have left many Japan accounts with multiple events counting the same action under different names. The result is that GA4 reports one conversion figure, Google Ads reports another, and Yahoo Japan reports a third — and none of them can be reconciled with actual CRM or transaction records.

Problem 4 — GTM container carrying inactive tags from previous campaign setups

Japan accounts managed by multiple agencies over time — which is common among international brands — frequently have GTM containers with outdated tags that are still active. Conversion tags from previous agency setups continue to fire alongside current ones, producing duplicate data that is invisible unless the full GTM container is reviewed systematically.

What we engineer

What the Conversion Tracking QA covers

Check 1 — Yahoo YST and Google Ads duplicate event audit

We specifically check for duplicate conversion events firing across Yahoo Japan's YST (Yahoo Search Ads Tracking) and Google Ads on the same user action. This includes reviewing all GTM tags associated with both platforms, checking confirmation and thank-you page trigger conditions, and comparing conversion volumes across platforms against a single source of truth. Where duplicate events are confirmed, we document the exact configuration causing the duplication and the steps required to implement deduplication without losing conversion history.

Check 2 — Call conversion tracking review

We audit whether phone call conversions are being tracked across Google Ads, Yahoo Japan Ads, and any third-party call tracking integration. For Google Ads, we verify whether call extension forwarding numbers are active and whether call conversion actions are configured correctly. For Yahoo Japan, we check whether call tracking is implemented and whether call conversion data is being passed to the bidding algorithm. Where call tracking is absent, the fix instructions specify exactly how to implement it for each platform.

Check 3 — Full GTM container audit

We review every tag, trigger, and variable in your GTM container. We identify inactive tags from previous setups that remain live, verify that all active conversion tags have correct firing conditions, and check that deduplication parameters are in place where multiple platforms track the same event. For Japan accounts with complex multi-platform setups, this review often surfaces issues that are not visible from within the Google Ads or Yahoo Japan Ads interfaces alone.

Check 4 — GA4 conversion event audit

We audit all GA4 conversion events against your measurement plan and against the actual events firing on your site. Duplicate event names, incorrect parameter configurations, and conversion actions that fire on page load rather than on genuine user actions are all documented with severity ratings and fix instructions.

Check 5 — Attribution gap analysis across all platforms

We pull conversion data from Google Ads, Yahoo Japan Ads, Meta (where applicable), and GA4 for the same period and reconcile the figures. Where they diverge materially — which they almost always do in Japan multi-platform accounts — we identify the specific cause of each gap and document what an accurate, deduplicated conversion picture looks like.

Common questions

FAQ

What is a YST tag and why does it cause duplicate conversion events?

YST is Yahoo Japan's conversion tracking tag — the equivalent of the Google Ads conversion tag for Yahoo Search Ads. When both the Google Ads conversion tag and the Yahoo Japan YST tag are placed on the same confirmation page and fire on the same user action, the same conversion is counted independently by both platforms. Because neither platform applies cross-platform deduplication by default, both bidding algorithms train against inflated conversion volumes. This is one of the most common tracking errors in Japan accounts running both paid search platforms.

Does the Japan QA cover Yahoo Japan Ads as well as Google Ads?

Yes. The Japan Conversion Tracking QA covers Google Ads, Yahoo Japan Ads, Meta Ads, GA4, and GTM. The duplicate event check between Yahoo YST and Google Ads conversion tags is a Japan-specific component of the audit that is not part of our standard QA for other markets.

How long does the QA take?

The report is delivered within 5 business days of receiving access to all platforms. If access to Yahoo Japan Ads or any other platform takes longer to arrange, we communicate the impact on the timeline immediately. Most Japan QA engagements are completed within the 5-day window.

Our accounts are managed by a Japan-based agency. Can you still run the QA?

Yes. We require read-only access to the accounts and the GTM container, which can be granted independently of your agency. The QA does not require the agency's involvement and does not affect their management relationship. Many clients use the QA report as a brief for their Japan agency to implement the fixes.

What if we do not currently use Yahoo Japan Ads?

The QA covers whichever platforms you are actively running. If you are running Google Ads and Meta only, the Yahoo Japan YST duplicate check does not apply — but all other components of the QA (GTM audit, GA4 event review, call tracking check, attribution gap analysis) remain in scope.
