Fix the crawl and indexation issues holding your Magento catalogue back from organic revenue in Nepal

Magento's layered navigation creates millions of crawlable URL combinations — most worthless, most indexed. Google wastes crawl budget on filter permutations instead of your best category and product pages. We fix the architecture so the right pages rank.

What's broken

Here's what's blocking your growth

Layered navigation creates unlimited junk URLs

Magento's layered navigation generates a unique URL for every filter combination a shopper can select: colour, size, price range, material, brand — in every order of selection. A catalogue with 10 filterable attributes can produce hundreds of thousands of crawlable URLs. Most contain duplicate content, no unique value, and compete with your real category pages. Google wastes crawl budget on these pages instead of your priority categories and products. Pages you want ranked get crawled less frequently — or not at all.

Configurable products and simple products create duplicate content

In Magento, a configurable product (e.g. "Pashmina Shawl") has child simple products for each variation (Red / Small, Red / Medium, Blue / Small). Both the configurable and simple product URLs are crawlable by default. Google sees near-identical pages with the same content indexed across multiple URLs. Link equity is diluted across parent and child product URLs. Google may rank a simple product variant page instead of your primary configurable product — or suppress all variants due to duplicate signals.

Canonical tags need manual strategy — defaults are often wrong

Magento generates canonical tags, but the default configuration does not account for layered navigation parameters, category path variations, or configurable/simple product relationships. Stores that have not been manually configured often have self-referencing canonicals on junk URLs and missing canonicals on priority pages. Incorrect canonical tags are direct instructions to Google about which pages to index and consolidate. Wrong settings mean Google indexes pages you do not want — and potentially suppresses pages you do.

XML sitemaps include pages that should never be indexed

Magento's default XML sitemap includes every product and category URL — including out-of-stock products, discontinued items, staging category pages, and filter-generated variants. A sitemap bloated with low-quality pages signals poor site quality to Google and wastes crawl allocation. Your sitemap should be a curated list of your highest-value, indexable pages. On large Magento catalogues, this requires an explicit inclusion/exclusion strategy — not the default "index everything" behaviour.

Category pages are thin at scale

Magento's default category page template renders an H1 (the category name) and a product grid. No descriptive content, no keyword-aligned copy, no structured headings. When you have 50 category pages all following the same template, Google sees 50 near-identical thin pages. Commercial keywords — "buy [product] online Nepal," "[product type] wholesale price" — need category pages with real content to rank. A grid of products will not compete.

Page speed is slow on large catalogues without a proper CDN and caching strategy

Magento's server-side rendering is resource-intensive. On catalogues of thousands of SKUs without full-page caching (Varnish), a proper CDN, and image optimisation, Time to First Byte (TTFB) and Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) scores consistently fail Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds. Core Web Vitals are a confirmed Google ranking factor. Slow Magento stores lose rankings and conversions — two revenue hits from the same root cause.

What we engineer

What's included

Magento crawl and indexation audit

A full technical crawl of your Magento store — URL structure, layered navigation configuration, canonical tag accuracy, XML sitemap contents, robots.txt rules, and Google Search Console coverage data. Large Magento catalogues accumulate indexation problems invisibly. Junk URLs get indexed, priority pages get suppressed, and organic traffic stagnates — all without a clear signal of what is wrong. You get a prioritised issue list with Magento-specific fix instructions: which URL parameters to manage, which pages to noindex, which canonical settings to change, and what to remove from your sitemap.

URL parameter and faceted navigation strategy

A deliberate strategy for every filterable parameter in your Magento store — whether to block via robots.txt, noindex via meta tag, canonicalise to the parent category, or manage via Google Search Console URL Parameters (where still applicable). Faceted navigation is the single largest source of crawl waste on Magento stores. Without a strategy, thousands of low-value URLs consume crawl budget that should go to your best pages. You get a parameter-by-parameter decision matrix, implementation instructions for your Magento configuration, and a post-implementation crawl validation to confirm the fix is working.

Category page content strategy at scale

Commercial keyword research mapped to every priority category in your Magento catalogue. Content briefs written for each — keyword-aligned H1s, introductory copy, structured headings, and internal linking anchors. Thin category pages are the second largest organic revenue leak on Magento stores after crawl waste. Category pages with real content rank for commercial keywords; product grids do not. You get content briefs for priority categories, written copy for the highest-value pages, and a content rollout plan for the remainder of the catalogue.

Product schema and rich results

Product structured data audited and implemented for all key attributes: name, price, availability, aggregate rating, SKU, brand, and condition. Tested against Google's Rich Results Test before deployment. Rich results — star ratings, price, availability — increase click-through rates in search. For Nepali stores competing against established retailers, rich results are a visible competitive advantage. You get valid Product schema across your catalogue, review platform integration for aggregate rating markup, and GSC rich results monitoring.

Magento page speed and Core Web Vitals

Server response time (TTFB), full-page cache configuration (Varnish/Redis), CDN setup, image format and delivery, render-blocking resource audit, and LCP/INP/CLS measurement across key Magento page templates. Magento is inherently slower than SaaS platforms at scale. Without deliberate performance configuration, large catalogues fail Core Web Vitals — affecting both rankings and conversion rate. You get a prioritised performance fix list with Magento-specific implementation notes, Core Web Vitals baseline and target measurements, and monthly CWV monitoring.

Organic revenue attribution (GA4 + GSC)

GA4 enhanced ecommerce configured and verified — sessions, transactions, revenue, and conversion rate tracked by channel, landing page, and product. Google Search Console integrated and monitored monthly. SEO without attribution is invisible. Knowing which category pages and keywords drive revenue — not just traffic — is what turns SEO into a business case. You get a monthly organic revenue report: impressions, clicks, rankings, transactions, and revenue by category. SEO investment with a clear, measurable return.

Before
After
Before Google's crawl budget is consumed by layered navigation junk URLs
After Layered navigation URLs are blocked, canonicalised, or noindexed per a deliberate strategy. Google's crawl budget is redirected to your priority category and product pages.
Before Thin category pages of product grids fail to rank for commercial terms
After Category pages carry keyword-aligned content. The H1, descriptive copy, and structured headings give Google what it needs to rank for the commercial terms your buyers use.
Before Products appear as plain blue links with no rich result features
After Product schema implemented: price, availability, aggregate rating, SKU, and brand. Your products appear with rich result features — price chips, star ratings, availability badges — in search results.
Before SEO is reported in rankings and traffic, with revenue assumed not measured
After GA4 enhanced ecommerce tracking and Google Search Console integrated. Every organic session, transaction, and revenue rupee is attributed. Growth is measured, not assumed.
Before The sitemap lists out-of-stock, discontinued, and duplicate URLs
After XML sitemap rebuilt to include only in-stock, canonical, indexable pages. Out-of-stock, discontinued, and duplicate URLs removed from the sitemap and managed via robots or noindex.
Before Large catalogues fail Core Web Vitals on category and product templates
After Server response time, full-page caching, CDN configuration, and image delivery audited. LCP and TTFB within Google's "Good" thresholds on category and product page templates.
Common questions

Questions

What is Magento layered navigation and how does it affect SEO?

Magento layered navigation is the faceted filter system that lets shoppers narrow a category by attributes like colour, size, price, and brand. From a user experience perspective, it is helpful. From an SEO perspective, it creates a combinatorial explosion of unique URLs — one for every possible filter combination. On a catalogue with 10 filterable attributes, this can generate millions of crawlable URLs. Most contain no unique value and duplicate the content of the parent category page. Google wastes crawl budget indexing these pages instead of your priority categories and products. The fix is a deliberate URL parameter strategy: block high-volume junk parameters via robots.txt, apply noindex meta tags to low-value filter pages, and ensure canonical tags on filter pages point to the parent category.

How do you handle Magento duplicate content at scale?

Magento generates duplicate content in two main places: layered navigation filter URLs (covered above) and the configurable/simple product relationship. A configurable product — say, a jacket available in three colours and four sizes — has 12 simple product child pages, each with nearly identical content to the parent configurable product page. We address this by implementing canonical tags on all simple product URLs pointing to the parent configurable product, removing simple products from the XML sitemap, and optionally applying noindex to simple product pages where they have no independent ranking value. The correct approach depends on your catalogue structure and whether any simple product variants have distinct commercial search demand.

Does Magento 2 have better SEO than Magento 1?

Magento 2 has significantly better default SEO capabilities than Magento 1. Key improvements include cleaner URL structure options, better canonical tag handling, improved XML sitemap configuration, native support for product rich snippets, and a more performant architecture that supports Core Web Vitals compliance. Magento 1 reached end-of-life in June 2020 and no longer receives security patches — for any Magento 1 store still in operation, migration to Magento 2 (or Adobe Commerce) is both an SEO and a security priority.

What is the difference between Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce for SEO?

Magento Open Source (the free, community edition) and Adobe Commerce (the paid, enterprise edition) share the same core architecture and the same SEO challenges — layered navigation, duplicate content, sitemap configuration. Adobe Commerce adds a set of enterprise-specific features: B2B catalogue management, advanced content staging, Page Builder, and cloud hosting infrastructure. For SEO, the most relevant difference is that Adobe Commerce Cloud provides a more predictable hosting environment with CDN and caching preconfigured — which helps with Core Web Vitals. The SEO work required on both editions is substantively the same.

How long does a Magento SEO audit take?

A thorough Magento SEO audit takes longer than an audit of a SaaS platform like Shopify or BigCommerce. A catalogue of up to 5,000 SKUs typically requires 5–7 business days for a full technical audit covering crawl analysis, URL parameter volume, canonical tag accuracy, sitemap contents, and Core Web Vitals. Catalogues above 10,000 SKUs or with complex layered navigation configurations require 10–14 days. We scope audits accurately upfront so you know what you are getting before work begins.

How much does Magento SEO cost in Nepal?

Magento SEO for Nepal-based stores is priced as an ongoing retainer, typically starting from NPR 55,000–90,000 per month depending on catalogue size, whether the store is on Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce, and how many markets are being targeted. A one-time technical audit and architecture remediation project can be scoped separately. The best starting point is a search diagnostic — it identifies exactly what your store needs before any retainer commitment.

Can you fix Magento SEO without access to the server?

Most Magento SEO work — canonical tag strategy, noindex implementation, sitemap configuration, and content changes — can be implemented through the Magento admin panel and does not require direct server access. URL parameter management via robots.txt and full-page cache configuration (Varnish) does require server or hosting panel access. We document every change with implementation instructions so your development team can execute what needs server-level access, and we handle everything that can be done through the CMS directly.

Does Magento support product schema for rich results?

Magento 2 includes basic Product schema by default, but the implementation is frequently incomplete. Attributes commonly missing or misconfigured include aggregate rating (requires a review platform integration), price range for configurable products, and availability status synced to real-time stock levels. We audit your existing schema output against Google's Product rich result requirements and implement the missing attributes — either through Magento's native schema configuration or a custom extension where the native options are insufficient.
