FEED & MERCHANT CENTRE

UK Google Merchant Centre accounts have a CSS pricing advantage and a Trustpilot integration that most brands are not using — both are in the feed configuration

Google Shopping in the UK operates under conditions that do not exist in other markets. A CSS partner arrangement reduces the effective click cost for Shopping placements without changing the ad's position or appearance. Trustpilot seller ratings can appear directly on Shopping ads, but only when the brand is enrolled in Google Customer Reviews and the feed is configured correctly. VAT-inclusive pricing is a legal requirement under UK Consumer Protection regulations, not a stylistic choice. Post-Brexit, UK and EU product feeds must be separated. Most UK brands are running a single feed that addresses none of these four issues.

What's broken

Problems We Solve

No CSS partner configured

UK brands are paying full Google Shopping CPCs when a Comparison Shopping Service (CSS) partner would provide the same Shopping placement at a lower click cost. CSS partners participate in the Google Shopping auction on behalf of advertisers and, under the EU and UK DMA settlement terms, CSS-submitted bids are subject to a reduction in the Google margin applied. The net effect is a lower CPC for the same placement. Setting up a CSS partner does not require any change inside Google Merchant Centre. It requires Merchant Centre access and a connection to the CSS partner account. Brands running Shopping without a CSS partner are paying a premium that is entirely avoidable.

Trustpilot seller rating not linked to GMC

UK brands with hundreds of Trustpilot reviews are not showing seller star ratings on their Shopping ads because they have not enrolled in Google Customer Reviews and have not linked their review source to Google Merchant Centre. Trustpilot reviews do not automatically appear on Shopping ads. The brand must either enrol in Google Customer Reviews (which collects post-purchase survey data) or connect a third-party review source via the Merchant Centre seller ratings programme. Both require feed-level configuration and a minimum review threshold before stars appear. Brands not enrolled are giving star ratings to competitors who are.

VAT-inclusive pricing not confirmed in feed

UK Consumer Protection regulations require that prices shown to consumers include VAT. Google Shopping pulls the price from the feed. If the feed contains ex-VAT prices, the price shown on the Shopping ad will differ from the checkout price, which includes VAT. This price mismatch is one of the most common causes of Google Merchant Centre account suspension in the UK. A 20% VAT differential between the advertised price and the checkout price is significant enough to trigger automated policy enforcement. Confirming VAT-inclusive pricing in the feed is a compliance requirement, not an optimisation.

Post-Brexit EU and UK feeds not separated

UK brands selling to both UK and EU customers after Brexit need two separate product feeds: one in GBP for UK-targeted Shopping campaigns, and one in the relevant EU currency for EU-targeted campaigns. A single feed with GBP pricing served to EU buyers shows GBP prices to customers expecting EUR or local currency prices. A single feed with EUR pricing served to UK buyers creates the VAT mismatch described above. Running one feed for both markets is a configuration that does not work correctly for either market. The separation requires a supplemental feed or a secondary data source connected to a second Merchant Centre account.

How it works

How we approach a Feed & Merchant Centre engagement for Nepali exporters

  1. 01

    Feed and account audit

    Week 1

We review the current GMC account status (or advise on account creation if one does not exist), audit the existing product feed for disapprovals and attribute gaps, and map the entity structure required to register a compliant account in the target market.

  2. 02

    Feed build and account configuration

    Weeks 2–3

We configure the Merchant Centre account with correct business information, shipping settings, return policy, and website verification. We build the primary feed with correct currency, language, and GTIN/identifier handling, and configure the Shopify export or feed tool integration.

  3. 03

    Supplemental feed and title optimisation

    Week 3–4

We build a supplemental feed to override Shopping titles with query-optimised versions for the target market. We add custom labels for campaign segmentation. We submit the feed and resolve any remaining disapprovals.

  4. 04

Free listings and Shopping campaign integration

    Week 4–5

We enable free product listings and confirm organic Shopping impressions are tracking. We connect the approved feed to Shopping campaigns or Performance Max and configure bid and segmentation settings.

  5. 05

    Ongoing feed management

We monitor feed health, resolve new disapprovals as the product catalogue changes, update shipping and pricing data, and manage seasonal supplemental feed updates.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I connect a CSS partner to Google Merchant Centre for UK Shopping?

A CSS partner connection is made at the Google Merchant Centre account level, not inside the feed itself. The CSS partner sends Shopping ads on behalf of the advertiser using their own CSS account linked to your Merchant Centre. The process requires granting the CSS partner access to your Merchant Centre account, after which they submit Shopping ads through their CSS account. The advertiser retains full control of product data and campaign budgets. The CPC reduction comes from the CSS partner's position in the auction, not from any bid change on the advertiser's side.

How do I link Trustpilot to Google Customer Reviews for seller rating stars in Shopping ads?

Google does not pull Trustpilot reviews automatically. To show seller ratings from Trustpilot on Shopping ads, a brand must either use Trustpilot's Google integration (which submits review data to Google via Trustpilot's aggregator partnership) or enrol in Google Customer Reviews separately and accumulate the minimum 100 reviews over a 12-month period. The Trustpilot integration route requires the brand to have a Trustpilot Business account with the Google integration enabled and a minimum number of eligible reviews. Stars appear on Shopping ads after Google verifies the review count and quality threshold.

How do I confirm that my Google Shopping feed shows VAT-inclusive pricing for UK buyers?

In Google Merchant Centre, the price attribute in the feed must include VAT for UK-targeted campaigns. The feed price should match exactly what the customer sees at the first stage of checkout before any promotional codes are applied. To verify, compare the price attribute in the feed export to the product page price on the storefront. If the storefront shows a VAT-inclusive price and the feed shows a lower number, the feed is submitting ex-VAT prices. This can be corrected in the feed by adjusting the price export logic in the platform (Shopify, WooCommerce, or custom feed) or by applying a supplemental feed price override.

Should I have separate UK and EU product feeds after Brexit?

Yes. Post-Brexit, UK and EU Shopping markets are separate regulatory and currency environments. A UK-targeted feed should use GBP pricing and comply with UK Consumer Protection and Merchant Centre policies. An EU-targeted feed should use the relevant EU currency and comply with EU Shopping policies. Running a single feed for both markets creates pricing mismatches for at least one audience. Separate feeds can be managed from separate Merchant Centre accounts or from a single account using multi-country feed targeting with separate data sources for each market.

How do I set up free product listings in Google Merchant Centre for the UK?

Free product listings (also called unpaid product listings) are enabled through the Surfaces across Google programme in Google Merchant Centre. To qualify, the feed must meet Google's product data quality requirements, including accurate pricing, product availability, and policy compliance. Free listings appear in the Shopping tab and, in some cases, in Google Search and Google Images. Enrolment is done in the Merchant Centre settings under "Surfaces across Google." Feed quality directly determines impression eligibility for free listings: feeds with title quality issues, missing attributes, or pricing mismatches receive fewer or no free listing impressions.
